Senior Brown Bag Program

This popular program provides twenty-one Senior Brown Bag distribution sites throughout Merced County biweekly bags of groceries to hundreds of seniors struggling to maintain their health and independence. Allowing our older neighbors to prepare wholesome meals at home, this program ensures that they are not forced to choose between buying food or paying for rent, utilities and medications.

Through this program seniors receive a grocery bag of food twice a month containing approximately 18-19 lbs. of good, nourishing, healthy food such as: whole grain breads, dairy products, fresh fruits and vegetables, dried fruit, juice, cookies, decaf coffee and other products as available. These bags have a market value of $80.00 to $90.00. Bags are filled and delivered to 21 different sites throughout Merced County, by the Merced County Food Bank, then volunteers distribute them. The seniors participating in this program may only have an income in the range of $300 to $800 per month and must choose between medicine, rent and utilities, or food.
